Have A Cow Urban Farm Store and Cafe

Have a Cow is a newer restaurant in the Gate District of St. Louis just west of Lafayette Square.   We had read about it recently and quickly added it to our places to try.

The story behind it is rather interesting and worth a full read.  But the short version is that the owners, Steve and Lisa St. Pierre, had opened a toy store in Edwardsville in 1987 and it had grown over the years adding 3 additional locations as well.  In 2006 they sold the company, moved to St. Louis and began working with New City Fellowship/Restore St. Louis.   Then in 2017 they purchased a farm in Owensville, MO and began raising cows.  At the same time, the idea for an Urban Farm Store began and thus the idea came to a reality in 2021.

The Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also has an extended coffee, tea, smoothies and spirits menu.   We came right at lunch so decided to try their Have a Cow Burger and The Porker BLT.   The meat from the burger is from their farm and is topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion, plus I added cheese and avocado.   It is served on a brioche bun.   The meat was extremely fresh, moist and flavorful.  The BLT comes with a very generous portion of bacon and served with lettuce, tomato on toasted bread.   (Yes, even Tom approved of the amount of bacon on the sandwich).  Sandwiches are served with one side.   We chose the battered fries, which were fresh, hot and very crispy.   But the other side - Hominy on the Range, was the star.  Creamy, soft, and cheesy this dish was delicious and something to definitely be tried! (Don’t let the fact that its hominy deter you)

The Cafe has indoor and also lots of outdoor seating which we love.  The menu consists of many items from sandwiches, to salads, and breakfast all day that we want to try.  There were also some cinnamon rolls and other sweets which will probably be purchased next trip as well.   The other fun thing about this place is the store where lots of fun, eclectic farm items are available, as well as t-shirts and meat from their farm. We spent a good deal of time just browsing all the items. We really wanted to purchase the “M” branding iron for steaks, but they were out so that gives us a great reason to return.

This is definitely a fun place and a must go to.
