Parkmoor Drive In
Ahh the Parkmoor. The Parkmoor originated back in 1925 at Clayton and Big Bend and went through many revisions over the years. However it started and was known for drive-up service with car hops, great burgers, “tempura” styled battered onion rings, and was the “place to go” all the way up till 1999 in which it finally closed. I can remember my mom telling me about it later in life how she would meet her friends there and hang out to see who would show up.
The new revamped Parkmoor in Webster Groves recreates the past and updates it for the present. For some reason we had this on our list forever to try but it was one of our son’s who picked it for us all to try and it really exceeded our expectations. We tried the Creole Gumbo which consisted of chicken, shrimp and andouille sausage, okra and peppers over rice. We have to say we were really blown away by this dish. The spices were hot but not too hot, and everything blended together nicely. Of course we had to try the Fried Bologna sandwich which is huge (we split it), but OMG this was wonderful. Its pan fried bologna with lettuce, tomatoes, pickes and their special sandwich spread AND it is served between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. This is one hefty dish but definitely worth getting! The Shrimp Po’Boy and the Mushroom Swiss Burger were the other choices and I can say that nothing was left on anyone’s plates. The fries were great, the mac and cheese tasty, and we left very full and happy.
We wish we had room left for the SnoBalls which are kind of like snow cones but the ice is smoother and you can also add liquor to them. They are even available from a walk-up window. There are many other items we want to try so maybe the next trip will include the SnoBalls.
Give this a try - its a lot of fun.
