Yellowstone and Jackson Hole

Our next stop was in Cody, Wyoming and we wanted to try someplace that really depicted the area.  We landed upon the Proud Cut Saloon.  From the outside it didn’t scream “western” but the inside definitely did.   From the wood walls and bar, to the stuffed animal heads we knew we were in the right place.   We started with cheese curds which are a western favorite.   They were hot with a great melted cheese but what made them different was they served them with ranch and also a caramel dipping sauce.   Wasn’t sure about the caramel but it worked really well with the cheese.  We then decided this was the place to try a bison burger.   Have to say this was wonderful - moist and flavorful and served on a brioche bun.  We were so glad we made this choice.   We opted for the side of onion rings which were definitely made in house and whatever was in the batter was fantastic.  Probably some of the best onion rings we have had.   We would also like to give a shout out to Pat O’Hara Brewing Company.   We stopped there earlier in the day to try a couple of their beers and the Kolsch and Pale Ale were fantastic.  This place also has a great atmosphere and outside seating area.  They also have a full menu but we just weren’t ready for a meal yet, but the beers were great.  The next morning we had breakfast at Our Place Cafe - a little independent restaurant on the outskirts of Cody.  The restaurant is cute, the help was friendly and we enjoyed our blueberry oatmeal and blueberry pancake before heading off to Yellowstone.

Jackson - We knew this part of the trip will be filled with great scenery, a town full of history but also great shops and restaurants.   Our first dinner did not disappoint.  We ate at the Silver Dollar Saloon in the Wort Hotel.  The hotel is filled with history of Charles Wort first purchasing the property in 1917 and the hotel which opened in 1941.  In 1950 the bar was added and embedded into the actual bar are 2032 silver dollars.  Our dinner in the bar was great - Elk Sliders, a side salad and also their famous Corn Chowder which was the best I had ever had.  The atmosphere is great and should definitely be a stop for visitors to Jackson.

Breakfast the next morning at Persephone Bakery was a recommendation from some friends.  Thanks for the recommendation as it was wonderful!  We had the super yogurt & granola as well as the scone skillet.  Tom loves biscuits & gravy however this was taken to an all new level.   The dish consisted of a cheddar & black pepper scone, fried egg, bacon Parmesan pine nut crumbles and red eye sausage gravy.   You can tell from the picture how amazing this dish looked and tasted.

Our last night was dinner at The Local.   We had reservations at the restaurant but were early so sat at the bar and ended up there for the rest of our dinner.  Our Old Fashions were a great start and then went to wine with dinner.   We had 3 dishes - the Butter Poached Lobster which was a lobster tail with roasted duck fat, new potatoes, crispy prosciutto and a chive oil.   Interesting and nice appetizer.   We then ordered dishes in line with the area - the Elk Chop and the star dish of the night - Buffalo Wellington which consisted of a buffalo tenderloin, mushrooms, spinach in a puff pastry with a horseradish bordelaise sauce.    This dish was wonderful and definitely worth ordering again.  As we were having a great conversation with a couple next to us we also ordered the Huckleberry Corn Cake for dessert.  At the waiter's suggestion we added the huckleberry ice cream on top which made the dish.   Nice restaurant, great food and atmosphere.

Breakfast our final morning was at The Bunnery before hitting the road.  This place has a lot of seating and some nice outdoor seating, but 30 degrees was a little cold for us.  We had the oatmeal and the French toast which were good but wished we had purchased some of their great pastries which were showcased and looked amazing.

We also visited some microbrews and bars in the area.   The first was a newer microbrewery called Snake River Brewing which had a great outside area where you could just put out a chair and have a beer.  This place was BUSY!   Another was the Roadhouse Brewing Company  where along with our beers we tried duck wings which we have to say were pretty good.  And finally no trip to Jackson would be complete without visiting the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar where when sitting at the bar you actually sit on saddles.   This place has been around for a long time and it is definitely a stop to make.
